Christmas break 2019, new location 2020

There will be no Go club meetings on December 22 and 29, 2019, as we'll break for Christmas holiday.

In the new year, we will have to make some changes. The Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association will no longer be hosting us in 2020, so we will need to change time and location for meetups.

We will be moving our meetings to Sundays 12-5 PM, on the third floor of the Calgary Central Library.

We aim to meet at the giant size chess board on the third floor. There are some tables that we can sit at. If those tables are occupied, we will find other tables on the third floor.

See you in 2020!

This tournament will use Chinese rules. Time controls, divisions and format will be based on registrations but the goal is to have 5-7 rounds and for everyone to play in every round. Priority will also be given to pairing local players with those from outside Calgary. If necessary a handicap will be instituted in the lowest division to ensure challenging games for all.

Registrations will begin Saturday June 15th at 9:00AM with the first round scheduled to start at 10:00AM.

Space is limited so registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis with priority given to players travelling from out of town. Please come by early to secure your spot!

The aim is to finish early on Sunday to facilitate players coming from out of town.

Snacks/drinks will be available but lunch will not be provided. Players are free to bring their own lunch or buy from nearby shops/restaurants. Free street parking is available within walking distance.

Players requiring a billet should email Vincent van der Ploeg at studentofsmith@gmail.com and I will try to match you with local players willing to host.

Hope to see you there!

Chinese New Year 2019, Feb 3+10 meetings moved to 2+9

Our hosts, the Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association, will be using our space for Chinese New Year celebrations during our regular meeting times on February 3 and 10. Go club meetings are cancelled for those dates.

However, the space is available on both Saturdays @ 6:30. A bunch of us will be getting together on the 2nd and 9th in lieu of regular meetups on the 3rd and 10th.

Happy year of the pig!

Christmas 2018

Most of us are busy on December 23 2018, so there will be no meetup on that day.

Our regular space will be unavailable on the following Sunday, December 30 2018.

Normal meetups shall resume on January 6, 2019. See you then!

Omatsuri 2018

The Calgary Go Club will be running a table at the 8th Annual "Omatsuri" Japanese Festival!

Details:

  • Who
    • Anyone who wants to play or learn Go!
  • When
    • Saturday, August 11, 2018, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

This is a great opportunity to introduce the game to beginners, and have a lot of fun in the process.

Vincent and Steve will be running the table as the official volunteers, but any other players are welcome to come by to play, chat, or teach. The rest of the festival is always a lot of fun too, so we hope to see you there!

Refreshed website

It's time for a refreshed website!

Website nerds will notice it's statically generated, uses HTTPS by default, and is generally more modern.

Otherwise, it'll continue as a place to announce goings-on with the club.
