Suspended again, fourth wave

Unfortunately, the COVID-19 situation has gotten critically bad and the province has suspended social gatherings. The Calgary Public Library has also suspended all events and meetings.

It's back to online play for now. Please get your doses of vaccine if you haven't already, and stay safe.

Calgary Go Club meetings resume August 29, 2021

Well, it's been a long time but we are now cleared to resume regular Go Club meetings!

Meetings shall resume at the Calgary Central Library, 12-5pm Sundays. The first day back is August 29th, 2021.

All attendees are encouraged to get their COVID vaccines, to protect themselves and everyone else. The pandemic hasn't gone away, but the more of us that are vaccinated, the safer we'll all be.

And of course, not everyone will be comfortable having social gatherings at this point in time. Only consider attending if you feel comfortable with it!

COVID-19 Update, meetings still suspended

Hopefully everyone's staying safe! The province will be opening up for Stage 2 relaunch this Friday, which means the library will be open.

However, we still need to be practicing physical distancing, which means Go Club is still not happening. Online play is still your best option.

Meetings suspended due to COVID-19

Go club meetings shall be suspended until further notice, starting with our upcoming meeting on March 15.

Please watch this space for updates, as the coronavirus situation is always changing.

But it is important to curb the spread of the disease to protect the whole community. As much as we love to play, safety must come first. So everyone, please take care of yourselves, and we will resume normal play when it is appropriate to do so.

EDIT: And now the libraries are closed too, so we couldn't meet even if we wanted to. Play online for now! Once the libraries reopen, look here for updates.

Christmas break 2019, new location 2020

There will be no Go club meetings on December 22 and 29, 2019, as we'll break for Christmas holiday.

In the new year, we will have to make some changes. The Calgary Jiang Zhe Shanghai Association will no longer be hosting us in 2020, so we will need to change time and location for meetups.

We will be moving our meetings to Sundays 12-5 PM, on the third floor of the Calgary Central Library.

We aim to meet at the giant size chess board on the third floor. There are some tables that we can sit at. If those tables are occupied, we will find other tables on the third floor.

See you in 2020!

Omatsuri 2019 - August 10

It's already time for the 9th annual "Omatsuri" Japanese Festival!

As has become tradition, the Calgary Go Club will be running a table, teaching beginners to play. Vincent and Steve will be running the table but any players are welcome to join, learn, teach, and chat.

This tournament will use Chinese rules. Time controls, divisions and format will be based on registrations but the goal is to have 5-7 rounds and for everyone to play in every round. Priority will also be given to pairing local players with those from outside Calgary. If necessary a handicap will be instituted in the lowest division to ensure challenging games for all.

Registrations will begin Saturday June 15th at 9:00AM with the first round scheduled to start at 10:00AM.

Space is limited so registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis with priority given to players travelling from out of town. Please come by early to secure your spot!

The aim is to finish early on Sunday to facilitate players coming from out of town.

Snacks/drinks will be available but lunch will not be provided. Players are free to bring their own lunch or buy from nearby shops/restaurants. Free street parking is available within walking distance.

Players requiring a billet should email Vincent van der Ploeg at and I will try to match you with local players willing to host.

Hope to see you there!
